Vernal pools are an essential habitat for many species across the state of New York. Large predators such as fish cannot mature in vernal pools and harm small amphibians, making them perfect breeding grounds. The Spotted and Jefferson Salamanders cannot survive without vernal pools. These types of organisms are known as Obligate Vernal Pool species. These pools provide the quintessential breeding grounds for a wide variety of amphibians and other animals.
